The sale date is confirmed as WEDNESDAY APRIL 30th at 10am. There will be an Open Day on the 29th April, where horses can be seen and a vet will be present to answer questions/arrange vettings. I am NOT familiar with the French auction system so any questions about auction procedure need to be directed at Alexandre, the vendor. The address of the stud is
Le Roc Campagnac Les Quercy 24550
Alexandre (French only) 05 65 20 13 79 Tiffany (English and translation help) 05 53 31 23 61
This stud dispersal is due to a dispute between the original owner, M. Sarazy, and the new owner of the property, Alexandre. The horses have been cared for at Alex's expense since Sarazy was evicted from the property, abandoning them there, over a year ago. The proceeds of the sale will hopefully go towards settling the considerable debt owed by Sarazy to Alexandre. Every effort has been made to keep these horses fed under very difficult circumstances, but they are all in poor condition now and will require time and good care to get them back into what we would consider a 'well state'. Please keep that in mind when viewing as it may be easy to feel shocked that horses in this condition have any value at all.
The ages of all the horses are on the stock list. The oldest are two of the foundation mares, Moon Bint Sultan & Eljoenai, Benamira (who was wrongly listed as 17 on the stock list. Her age is 27) Indian Mukhalladia and Moonlucka. All these mares have been heavily bred and I wouldn't like to see them going to working homes from here. The eldest are in very poor condition. Moon Bint Sultan is the most bred mare and out of all of them is in the wobbliest state.
Four or five of the others mares are probably reaching the end of their breeding use and would not be of much interest to studs but might well make quiet hacks. I think it is likely that most of the mares have been ridden and competed in their time, but not for some years.
Most of the younger mares seem relatively easy to handle and will probably be capable of regular work although it should be noted that some of them, such as SALHOME, who has the most impressive endurance competition record, are no longer sound enough to compete. SALHOME in particular, has a bony enlargement on her right knee which seems to be restricting the flexion of the joint.
One or two other horses on the stud also have suspect lumps and bumps, and many of the feet are in terrible condition, especially on the youngsters. It is definitely in the best interest of everyone to make sure that they check the soundness of horses they intend to buy for riding.
Many have asked me which of the horses have been broken to ride. It has been difficult to ascertain as none have been ridden for months and no one I know has done so, but I am told that most of the horses aged 6 or over have been both ridden and competed in Endurance Competition up to 160km, so where the age is more than 6, you can pretty much assume they are broken and have worked/competed. A considerable number of these have very good endurance credentials up to International competition level. Some of the 4 and 5 yr olds have been started but not competed but most of the youngsters have barely been touched.
Some of the very young ones may not be halter broken.
At this moment I don't have enough familiarity of the horses to know which ones are quiet and easy of temperament and which are not. Alexandre can tell you more, but as he has been caring for them but he can only really give you an idea of their general temperament/demeanour. I believe all his knowledge of their background experience is second hand. It would be better to research particular horses names in order to have some idea if they have been used in the Endurance world.
I'm unable to determine prices more accurately at this time. Certainly there are some which will fetch meat price of 1000 Euros or less. Some are on offer at under 2000 Euros. Most of the stock should fetch between 2-20,000 Euros. You will have to use your judgement to decide which they might be. As a rule, you can assume that the 4-15yr olds will all get reasonable prices where they are sound and generally in good health.
There will be a valuation of sorts available by the end of this week and I will update the stock list with guide prices when I have them. I'm trying not to give inaccurate information, but the situation is changing all the time, so please forgive me for any errors that slip in!
There will not be any possibility to ride any of the horses before the sale, sorry. There are no facilities or equipment to do so, and the horses are not in a suitable state to be ridden.
At the moment I have no photos, and honestly, it would do the horses no favours to take them right now. They all look dreadful, even the better conditioned ones are bony. If we get a sunny day I may take some group shots and mail them to everyone with a rough guide as to which horses are which, but I think I may have to spend about two days brushing them all down beforehand!
Best I can say for now is, most of them look like Arabs of reasonable quality, well put together, strong framed, deep chested and clean-legged. There are one or two which are of poor quality and this will no doubt be well reflected in their prices.
Heights. People have asked me for heights and obviously, I have not measured any of them but as a rough guide it should be noted that nearly all of them are under 15.2h. They are Egyptian and probably Russian/Polish lines. There are some very pretty heads and good shapes among them but they are working arabs, not show arabs, specifically bred to do Endurance of up to 180km carrying adult men, so you can assume they are strong, despite their smallish size. Please do not come looking for a 'tall one'! There are no more than two or three 'taller' horses and I'm fairly sure they are not more than 15.2 or 3 at a push.
